Tower
Tower Records is finally dead, all their stores are being liquidated including Chicago..

Beginning with a 10% sale on everything, gradually increasing the discount until the store is empty...

It's been a long time since Tower was a good music store....but I lament it's loss anyway...the last music store in the South Loop bites the dust...following the Demise of 'Crows Nest' and 'Rock Records'

Are ANY physical music stores making money? I can't remember the last time I bought a physical CD in a physical location, other than directly from an artist.

Good Question..

Actually most of the recent CDs I've bought were at either Tower (being between work and public trans), Virgin, or at Specialist stores like Evil Clown on the north side, or Digital Ferret in Philadelphia (who do mail order as well)

I think specialist stores have a better chance, especially if they do net sales. In Digital Ferrets case, it is pretty much the best Goth/Industrial Music store in North America.
